Founder Bali Pet Crusaders was founded and is managed by Australian animal lover, Deb Banfield. Deb served for over 20 years in the Royal Australian Navy and discharged due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other medical issues. Deb created Bali Pet Crusaders as a form of therapy and focus for her conditions and as a way of 'giving back' to Bali for bringing joy to her life in times when she needed it.
Directors Bali Pet Crusaders is managed by a board of 6 Directors. Each of these directors have a unique back ground and bring their own strengths to the team.
Director & Founder - Deb Banfield I grew up in England and moved to Australia as a teenager in 1981. As a child I found joy in the animals around me, both wild and domestic, rescuing snakes, mice, rabbits, dogs, cats, cows, horses, sheep, goats and even tortoises and hedgehogs. I spent many a night in my little wooden stable in the back garden with my animals and that is where I felt most at peace. I joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1984 and Served for over 20 years. I retired in 2006, with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other medical conditions and once again found myself with time to devote to my love of animals. After volunteering with various organisations, I created Bali Pet Crusaders, in June 2014, to combat the ever growing overpopulation of dogs and cats in Bali by providing highly subsidised sterilisation for stray dogs and cats and those owned by locals on a low income. I believe that by reducing the population in an ethical way, we can help the Balinese people and their animals and reduce the suffering of millions of dogs and cats. Bali Pet Crusaders is my passion and doubles as my therapy for my Military based Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. That’s a humungous win win in my eyes.
Director - Helen Montgomery Hi I am Helen and I have been with Bali Pet Crusaders since its inception in June 2014. I first travelled to Bali in 2007 and fell in love with the people and animals. I was raised in the Southern Highlands of NSW and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1995 as a Boatswains Mate, seagoing sailor. During my 10 year career, I served on HMA Ships Melbourne, Newcastle, Jervis Bay and Kanimbla. In 2000, I spent 6 months in the Gulf in Operational Service. Since discharging from the Navy in 2005, I have worked in various fields including the public service, mining, hospitality, disabled care, farming and had my own cleaning and gardening business. Currently, I am the Workplace Health and Safety Officer at Young Mining Company.
I am proud to be a director of Bali Pet Crusaders and travel to Bali for 2 – 4 weeks each year to volunteer in the charity.
Director - Pam Ramsay I was born in urban Melbourne in the 1950’s where it was rare for a dog or cat to be sterilised. A common sight on our daily trip to the beach were, hessian bags full of drowned puppies or kittens. If an animal was injured or ill a trip to the vet was a luxury most people could not afford. I was lucky to have an animal loving family and my mother became used to me coming home with stray dogs and cats to look after and rehome. I was fortunate enough to move to a rural area after I was married where I was able to indulge my passion for animals. My children grew up with a menagerie of dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and birds. I was also fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively in Asia and the South Pacific where I saw conditions for animals that were even worse than when I was a child. After my family were off my hands I had the life changing experience of volunteering at an animal shelter in Bali. Being hands on with the animals for two weeks was a privilege I will never forget and so I was honoured to be asked by Deb Banfield to join Bali Pet Crusaders. I believe this grass roots organisation will make a huge difference to the wellbeing of both the people and animals in Bali.
Director - Fiona Hooper My name is Fiona Hooper and I live in Adelaide Australia. I have been a Veterinary Nurse since 2004 and have worked in a Veterinary Emergency Centre since 2009. I love my job and have a passion for animals and their care. Working in the animal care industry is my calling. I have my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and a Diploma in Emergency and Critical Care. I have volunteered with animals around the world and have been extremely fortunate to do so in some amazing places. I have volunteered in South Africa, in shanty townships in Soweto where I assisted local Veterinarians from Pretoria to provide health care to the pets that belonged to the local people. I have been privileged to do volunteer work with the State Veterinarians in Kruger National Park where I assisted with the capture of two male White Rhino, assisted with the post mortem of a Lion suffering Tuberculosis and tracked Buffalo with Foot and Mouth disease from a helicopter. I have volunteered at a dog rescue centre in Bali and also volunteered with elephants, cats and dogs in a nature park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The volunteer work that I am most proud to be involved in is the Bali Pet Crusaders. I met my fellow crusaders in 2013 whilst on a volunteer trip in Bali. My good friend Deb Banfield created the group and asked me to join in 2014. Our group provides free sterilisation of street dogs and cats and those owned by the local community. We rely on donations from animal lovers in Australia, Bali and around the world, without these generous donations we could not continue this good work.
